On Saturday 24 October a new restaurant called Habit opened on the ground floor of the Ogiński and Potulicki Palace at ul. Piłsudskiego 4, a short walk west of the Main Square. It is run by Marek Rusiński, the Krakow chef better known online as Maro Kafaro, and the name nods to the building's last life: for decades after the war the palace housed the Archdiocese of Kraków's seminary.

The menu is Central European, built around the cooking of the old Austro-Hungarian monarchy with a strong Polish and Galician accent, and the palace promises generous portions. The kitchen opens daily at 13:00. We have not eaten there yet. As with every opening, we give the kitchen a few weeks to settle, then visit, order and score it like everything else on this site.

The building

The palace is half the reason to go. It was built in the 17th century as a Baroque house, later rebuilt in Classicist and Neo-Gothic dress, and belonged to the Ogiński family. Between the wars it held an exclusive casino and the Krakow Equestrian Society, and after 1945 it became the seminary. The same address hosted the Ogród KRK food garden this summer, which we covered in our summer openings.

Upstairs: bars, jazz and art

Above the restaurant the building is turning into an evening venue: bars on the first and second floors, including a whisky room called Biblioteka, a cigar lounge, and a jazz club for concerts and jam sessions. On the first floor, "9 rooms, 9 artists" gives each room to a different artist, and you can sit there with a drink. Some of the bar spaces were still marked as opening soon on the palace website when we checked.

The art is run with Bunkier Sztuki: Agata Kus's exhibition Spirits on the second floor, and Pod powierzchnią (Below the Surface) by Tomasz Górnicki and Igor Dobrowolski in the annex basement, open Friday to Sunday in timed groups of up to 25 people, with booking required.
