Matcha went from a niche order to a fixture of every second cafe menu in Krakow over the last two years. The problem is that most of those cafes buy the cheapest culinary powder they can find, whisk it badly, and hand you a cup that is yellow-green, chalky, and bitter under the milk. Good matcha is a different drink entirely: bright green, smooth, faintly sweet, with a clean lift instead of a coffee jolt. This is a short guide to the places that get it right: three cafes across Krakow that take matcha seriously, led by the one that blends its own.

The clear leader is Café Belmont in Kazimierz, and it has an advantage almost no other cafe in the city has: it whisks its own matcha, sold under its own Yume Matcha brand, so the powder in your cup is chosen by the people serving it rather than whatever a wholesaler dropped off. Two more are worth crossing the river for: a dedicated matcha bar in Podgorze and a highly rated coffee and matcha room in Debniki. If you are exploring around them, pair this with our Kazimierz guide and the specialty coffee map.

What good matcha actually is

Matcha is shade-grown green tea, dried and stone-ground into a fine powder, then whisked into water rather than steeped and strained like a tea bag. Grade matters more than anything else on the menu. Ceremonial grade uses the youngest leaves, grinds finer, and is made to be drunk on its own or with milk. It is vivid green and naturally sweet. Culinary grade is coarser and sharper, built for baking, where sugar hides the bitterness. A cafe that uses ceremonial grade and whisks it correctly gives you a cup that needs no syrup to be pleasant. A cafe cutting corners gives you something you have to sweeten to finish. The color tells you which one you are holding before you taste it.

Café Belmont

On Berka Joselewicza in Kazimierz, a short walk from Galeria Kazimierz and the Hala Targowa market, Belmont is a small specialty cafe that treats matcha with the same seriousness other places reserve for espresso. The reason it stands out is simple: the matcha is their own. They serve it under the Yume Matcha brand, which means the grade is chosen on purpose, kept fresh, and prepared by people who know what it should taste like. The result is a latte that is properly green rather than murky, with the sweet, grassy note that only shows up when the powder is good and the whisk is done right. In summer the iced versions and seasonal specials are the ones to order. The room is compact and easygoing, better for a slow twenty minutes than a laptop afternoon, and the takeaway cups are hard to miss on the street outside.

Ayko Matcha Bar

The only place on this list where matcha is the whole point, not a second menu. Ayko is a dedicated matcha bar in Podgorze, on Wegierska, opened by the team behind Boby specialty coffee. Ceremonial grade, whisked to order, in a small pared-back room built around the drink. Hours are short and it leans takeaway, so check before you cross the river, but if you want to taste what good matcha is supposed to be, this is the cleanest version of it in the city. Boby Specialty Coffee & Matcha

South of the river in Debniki, Boby is the specialty coffee cafe that put matcha in its name and means it. It is the highest rated of the three on Google, a neighborhood favorite that does a serious flat white and an equally serious matcha, which is a rarer combination than it should be. Worth the short tram ride if you want both drinks done well in one sitting, or if Podgorze and Debniki are already on your route.

How to order

A plain matcha latte is the honest test of a cafe, so start there before you add anything. If the cup is bright green and pleasant on its own, you are in the right place. From there, the iced matcha is the summer move, and the seasonal specials are worth asking about when the menu changes. Oat milk works better with matcha than most people expect, and Belmont, like most specialty cafes in Krakow, keeps it on hand. Prices for matcha drinks in the city run roughly 16 to 22 PLN, with the iced and seasonal versions at the top of that range.

For the rest of the neighborhood, the Kazimierz guide covers where to eat and drink around it, the specialty coffee guide handles the coffee side, and the food map shows how Kazimierz fits together with the rest of the city.

Around Café Belmont: what to see nearby

Belmont sits in the eastern end of Kazimierz, a few minutes from the river, which makes it a good start for an afternoon that is not only about the cup. Walk down to the Vistula boulevards and cross the Bernatka footbridge into Podgorze: on the far bank is Cricoteka, the art centre built around Tadeusz Kantor, and a little further toward Zablocie is MOCAK, the Museum of Contemporary Art next to the Schindler factory. Both are the serious, independent end of Krakow's art scene, not the postcard version. Back on the Kazimierz side, the small galleries and studios along ul. Józefa are a short walk west, best browsed slowly with no plan. Our Podgorze guide covers where to eat once you are across the river, and the food map shows how the two districts join up.

Questions people actually ask

Where can I drink matcha in Krakow?

The most serious matcha in Krakow is in Kazimierz at Café Belmont on ul. Berka Joselewicza 12, which whisks its own matcha under the Yume Matcha brand. Two more are worth it: Ayko Matcha Bar, a dedicated matcha bar in Podgorze on ul. Węgierska 12, and Boby Specialty Coffee & Matcha in Debniki on ul. Konfederacka 27, the highest rated of the three on Google. A matcha latte runs about 16 to 22 PLN.

What is Yume Matcha?

Yume Matcha is a brand of Japanese matcha. In Krakow you can drink it at Café Belmont in Kazimierz, which prepares its matcha with Yume Matcha rather than a generic supermarket powder. The difference shows in the color and the taste: a good matcha is bright green and smooth, not yellow-brown and bitter.

Ceremonial or culinary matcha, which should I choose?

For anything you drink, ceremonial grade. It uses the youngest leaves, grinds finer, and is bright green and naturally sweet. Culinary grade is coarser and more bitter, made for baking where sugar covers the taste. If you are ordering a latte, you want ceremonial grade in the cup.

How much does a matcha latte cost in Krakow?

Roughly 16 to 22 PLN at a specialty cafe, about 4 to 5.50 USD. Iced matcha and seasonal versions sit at the higher end. Cafes using proper ceremonial grade, like Café Belmont, price a little above places using cheap culinary powder, and the cup tells you why.
